How do the ESP Students Use AI for English Language Learning?

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English Language Learning has gained increasing attention, particularly in the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This study aims to explore ESP students’ perspectives on the use of AI in learning English. The participants of this study were 76 students from the Midwifery Department at Poltekkes Kemenkes Malang. A survey research design was employed, utilizing a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis to identify patterns of students’ responses and experiences. The findings reveal that the respondents generally demonstrated positive attitudes toward the use of AI in English language learning. Students perceived AI tools as helpful in improving their understanding of English, particularly in ESP contexts such as medical terminology, translation, and professional communication. In addition, AI was considered beneficial in supporting independent learning, increasing learning flexibility, and providing immediate feedback. Many students reported that AI tools enhanced their confidence in using English, especially in completing academic tasks and practicing language skills. In conclusion, the study highlights the potential of AI as an effective supplementary tool in ESP-based English learning. It also underscores the importance of continuous institutional support through structured programs to maximize students’ learning outcomes. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on AI integration in language education, particularly within healthcare education contexts.
